Adventures in Burlap

First off let me say that this is NOT an original idea from me. I saw it on Pinterest and Etsy and wanted to try it out. Please know that I'm not trying to steal anyone else's idea and I don't take credit for coming up with this.
But I was so happy with how these place mats turned out that I thought I'd share it with my friends on here and encourage you all to try them for yourself. This is the way I did it, maybe there's better ways of going about it. But I'm just going to share what I did :)

To begin with, I needed burlap. We found ours at Walmart and bought two yards for a little over $5.00.

It was more than plenty to do my four place mats. And now I have a lot left over for future projects, yay! :)
Next I needed stencils. We also found these at Walmart. You could try to free hand these letters on the placemat but I wanted them all to be uniform. Stencils were the way to go for me. I also needed a good, thick Sharpie :)

A good sharp pair of scissors was a necessity. And it also helped to have a ruler or some other straight edge to help me mark straight lines to cut.

My place mats were 18" by 14". I measured and cut them out and then it was on to the stencils!

Jonathan suggested that I start with the last letter of each word on the place mat and work backwards. This helped me so I wasn't running out of room without knowing it. Also it's good to place a thicker piece of paper underneath the burlap when you stencil. This keeps the Sharpie from getting onto whatever table you're working on.
And with a little patience and carefulness I was finished with this one!

I then took a break to eat leftover lasagna. This picture makes it look regurgitated, but I assure you, it was delicious!

After my little break I was motivated to carry on and after awhile I was able to enjoy the finished product.

The Nom-Nom one was Jonny's idea. Hilarious ;)

I plan on stitching around all the edges eventually to keep them from fraying. But for now I enjoy seeing them on table whenever I walk by. Go make you some! Make them for your home or give them as a personalized gift to someone. They're inexpensive, easy to make, and so cute. It doesn't get much better than that :)

Perfected Weakness

He’s laying on that hospital bed all ready to go in for surgery number five. I’m sitting with him in this small room on an uncomfortable chair. We wait. Nurses come in and out, they talk to us, hook up the IV and try to make him comfortable. Everyone is nice. But I just want it to be over with.
In the midst of nurses coming in and out to prep Jonathan, when no one else is around, he hands me his wedding band. You’re not allowed to wear any kind of jewelry in surgery. I take it from him and feel the weight of it in my hand, it feels so heavy. He tells me to put his ring on my necklace so I won’t lose it.
“What?!” I think, “This necklace isn’t strong enough to hold that bulky ring.”
The chain holding the diamonds in the shape of the heart, close to my heart, is beautiful but delicate. It’s the necklace he gave me on the day I became his wife. It’s precious to me and I’m very unsure of placing his tungsten carbide metal band on it, surely the weight of his ring would snap the chain.

I shake my head, “It’s too thin.” I tell him that I’m afraid his wedding band is too heavy for the necklace, “It’ll break it.” I say.
He just rolls his eyes at me. This man knows me well. He’s all too aware of how much of a worrier I am. He just smiles, gives me those ‘come on, trust me’ eyes and hands me his ring. I undo the chain from around my neck and thread the heavy circle of metal onto it. I feel the weight of the ring pull my necklace down on my chest.
Is this what he feels all the time? Not the weight of the ring, but the weight of responsibility that comes with being a husband?

If you look at Scripture, the requirements that God places on the husband are not for the faint of heart. God designed that the man should be the head of the home. He is held accountable for his family. Yes, we are all held accountable to God for our personal decisions, I realize that. But being the head of the home, the husband is responsible for the spiritual direction of the family.
For the husband is the head of the wife even as Christ is the head of the church, His body, and is Himself it’s Savior. Ephesians 5:23
But I want you to understand that the head of every man is Christ, the head of a wife is her husband and the head Christ is God. 1 Corinthians 11:3

That isn’t something to be taken lightly. And Jonathan knows it.
I asked him about it weeks later, after the surgery. What does the responsibility of being a husband feel like to you? He told me that there’s pride in being a husband, pride in the fact that you’ve been entrusted with so much. But also the fear of failing.
He said, “It’s like representing your country in the Olympics. Everyone is watching you and you just can’t let them down.”
“How serious are you about being the leader in the home?” I asked.
He admitted to me that sometimes he doesn’t take it seriously enough (I so much appreciate his humble honesty!).
“I need to take it as seriously as I take my next breath.” He said. “My wife and, one day, children depend on me. I am responsible.”
Maybe sometimes Jonathan looks at himself and feels like I did when I looked at the chain for my necklace. I thought it was to weak to hold his ring and maybe he feels to weak to carry all this responsibility. Sometimes, I know, he feels like he just can’t do it. It is overwhelming.
I also asked him how he deals with feeling overwhelmed. His answer made me proud:
He said, “You take on the role of being the husband with joy because it’s a privilege God has given you.”
I know that Jonathan gets scared of his own limitations at times. But that doesn’t stop him from trusting God and accepting this responsibility. And it doesn’t stop him from everyday trying to please God in how he handles all the demands of being the leader in our home. But Jonathan is human and he doesn’t always get it right. God knows that we are weak, Scripture tells us that,
“As a father shows compassion to his children, so the Lord shows compassion to those who fear Him. For He know our frame; He remembers that we are dust.” Psalm 103:13-14
He knows with His power we can do the impossible. Even be a God-glorifying husband. God works abundantly in grace.
And from His fullness we have all received, grace upon grace. John 1:16
The day he had his surgery I placed that ring on my necklace and it was heavy. At times I thought it might break, but it didn’t. The necklace held. And kept holding together all through his surgery until afterwards when he was in recovery and put his wedding band back on. He’s told me before how he doesn’t like not wearing it, he feels incomplete without it.
And how incomplete are we without the awareness of our limitations but moreso, the foundational truth that,
“I can do all things through Him who strengthens me.” Philippians 4:13
I’m so proud of the husband that God has given me. He is a very precious gift. But much more than that I realize, and am very grateful, of the grace of Jesus Christ and the working of the Holy Spirit. Without it, we would snap under the responsibilities that God has given us. But with it we can live this life how God intended us to: As husband and wife representing (not at all perfectly) the love Christ has for His bride, the Church.

But He said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for My power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me. For the sake of Christ, then, I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and calamities. For when I am weak, then I am strong. 2 Corinthians 12:9-10
And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that having all sufficiency in all things at all times, you may abound in every good work. 2 Corinthians 9:8
“Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in Me. I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in Me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from Me you can do nothing.” John 15:4-5
On our wedding day, August 20, 2011. First year anniversary coming up very soon! So blessed :)

To Be Honest...

Just to be clear, my husband knows that I'm posting this on my blog (in fact, he helped me write it). And I'm not sharing it to vent but simply to show that we're not perfect and how God works in our lives. :)
We had a fight today. It was short but ugly. I won't go into details but basically it all boils down too this: I was impatient, demanding and bratty and he was inconsiderate and stubborn. In the end, a fight like this winds up with both partners losing. He got mad and needed space and I plopped myself down to pout in the other room.
    Yuck.
Sometimes you think being right is the most important thing. It's all that matters to you at the time. And you end up pushing your partner's face down in the mud to get there first. Marriage isn't always snuggling, and sweet words, believe me.
Eventually, my husband came and found me. He humbled himself (which I believe was a wonderful and very manly quality for him to show) and apologized. It made me feel sad that I had been such a brat and I apologized as well. We made up in the usual husband/wife way: a kiss and a good long hug :) Thank God for how He has worked in both our lives! He is continually using His grace to teach us how to forgive and admit our failures to one another.
I just want people to know that we aren't perfect. I depress myself at times by thinking that other couples don't fight like we do. I falsely believe that no one else has selfishness problems in their marriage like us. Even if my head knows that's not true, I let my emotions run wild in the dark forest of comparison. And before I know it, I'm stressed out, joyless and wondering which way is North.
The truth is if you're in any serious relationship, whether it's a friendship, paternal relationship, sibling relationship or marriage relationship, you. are. going. to. fight. At some point, you will. If you haven't yet, I'd wonder how serious your relationship really is. It's just a fact of life.
I'm not encouraging you to fight in your relationships. Honestly, if you're human you won't need any encouragement in that area, it'll happen sooner or later :) But what I am saying is, learn from it. Let God use it in your life to teach you humbleness by admitting your mistakes and gracefulness by extending forgiveness.
And also don't be discouraged by your failures. Everybody has them. But don't be like I am sometimes and compare yourself or your relationship to other's. Just live the life that God has given you (and you alone) totally surrendered to His grace and way of living. That's the best way to glorify Him. <-------- I didn't just write that because I have it down, I wrote it because I need to hear it my self. Again, and again and again....aaaaaaand again. :)
So, to be honest. Jonathan and I fight. We are selfish. We need the grace of Jesus and the working of the Holy Spirit. Every. Single. Day.
And we also love one another very much. We care enough about our marriage to patch up the holes (by God's grace) we put in our little boat and keep sailing on.We just love figuring out life together as best friends. Praise God for marriage!

ps. This has nothing to do with the above post but I just thought I'd share a little somethin' somethin' that made me happy yesterday. My sister Mel told me about an app for people with smartphones that I have wanted for a long time. It's a photo collage app called, Photo Grid. At least that's the one I downloaded and I love it! You can easily make pics like this:
So if you can, go download it! It's free, yay! And finally, here's the one I made for today. We organized and cleaned out our storage room to create a craft room for me. I can't wait to see the projects that come out of here! Now, on to Pinterest ;)

Late Gift-Givers and Nerds

I've discovered that I love to give personalized gifts. It's just fun to create or find something completely unique for the people you care about. But I've also discovered that I'm a late gift-giver. Oh, I like to give gifts alright they just end up getting to the person a lot later than the day they are supposed to....I need to be more responsible! Well....I don't know, maybe it's kinda fun for a gift to arrive after the intended special day. Perhaps it gives people something more to look forward to. :)
Well, recently me and my sister, Melissa, celebrated our birthday on June 5th. I love that we share a birthday. But we don't always get to be together on that day because we live in different states. I wanted to get her something special, and was all set to peruse the online aisles of Etsy to find that unique gift when, lo and behold, Jonathan came up with the idea to go to Hobby Lobby and get everything we needed to make her a necklace ourselves.. I love that my man is creative too! :)
Here's how it turned out:

We got the bee charm because her name means 'honey bee' and the rest of it was just to make it look vintage and feminine, two things Mel loves :)
We also bought an engraving tool to put a special message on the necklace. It's part of a quote from Mother Teresa that says, "....Life is a song, sing it..."
If you know Melissa, you know that she loves music and loves to sing. So I thought the quote was fitting ;)
Jonathan did a fine job of engraving!

See the pink and green bead part? Yea, that was just an old earring that I had lost the pair to. I love the freedom you have to be creative when you do things  yourself!

So I sent it off and then waited (impatiently) to get my gift from Melissa. It finally came today along with a hilarious letter. I love this necklace! For those of you who might not recognize this, it's the necklace that Arwen wears in Lord of the Rings called The Evenstar. Yep, that's right, I'm a LOTR nerd. I've wanted this necklace for forever and my wonderful sister knew that. So I was pretty happy to open up the package and find this inside:

Well, there ya go. Here's to the ones who don't give gifts exactly on time. It's ok, don't feel bad. You're not alone. And also, don't be afraid to be a bit nerdy at times ;)

PS. We recently discovered this little gem at McDonald's. The new Chocolate Chip Frap. Do yourself a favor and go get one. Now. It's carmel, chocolatey goodness will make any day instantly better. And it's a bit cheaper than Starbucks too...enjoy!

A Fairly Good Cookie

The evening started with making a giant chocolate chip cookie in an iron skillet (yes, it's as good as it sounds.) And ended at the Fair. Amber came over before we met Jonathan's family over at the fairgrounds to help me make this delectable creation. We had fun :)

It came out beautifully. Oh, yummy.

And this is the best ice cream we have found to go with it. Soo......good!

By the way, I found a home for those glass bottles from Hobby Lobby :)
Thank you Jonathan for making these pictures....interesting.

Finally got a good one :)

Then it was on to the Fair!

I don't ride Fair rides (anything set-up overnight is not trustworthy in my book) but they made for good pictures!
The little guys enjoyed the rides though....but Amos was a bit confused by the train at first.

I love this child's face.
Ciara and Mamaw.

And we could literally see our house from the Fairgrounds!

These photos by Jonathan, he's so talented :)

Amos and Grandpa watching his Mommy riding the Superman ride. I love his expression, pure joy :)

I ate a $1.00 hotdog, snapped too many pictures, and laughed at my husband while he flirted with me. More memories, more life together and more reasons to choose thankfulness.
Thank You Jesus for it all.

Twice as Nice....

Today was a good day. A random, relaxing day. This post is just to share it. Forgive some of the pictures, they were taken on my phone ;)
We started off at Cracker Barrel where we were severely creeped out by this picture at our table.

We played that game (that I don't know the name of). Getting pegs in the right holes is harder than it looks ;)

We also went to Dick's Sporting Goods. Where else can you find better Father's Day Gifts?

And eventually we went to Plato's Closet where Jonathan found this amazing t-shirt for me. It has quickly been promoted to my new favorite tee.

Did I mention it only cost $4.00?!

I was excited about it.
We came home and not long after Jonathan's Mom calls us to ask if we want to join them for dinner. Of course we did! Where did we end up? Good ol' Cracker Barrel. Yep, that's right. Twice in one day.

I sat with Ciara. Which means quirky entertainment and good photo ops! =)

Once our bellies were full we headed out to the porch to wait on the rest of crew. Ciara scrambled all over the rocking chairs like a little squirrel. I love that wild child.

Then we drove home with the sun setting. It was a good day. I'm thankful for it. And thankful to have a camera to capture the fun, cute or sweet moments. They were every today and....(to borrow a quote).... that's when I snapped. ;)
